In Reception, we work from the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We continue our play-based learning as well as taking part in small group, adult-led activities. Our teachers observe us and decide best how to move our learning forwards by joining in with our play and adding resources that we are interested in into the areas of provision. We engage in play both inside the classroom and in the outside area to develop our skills in Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

We encourage children to engage with activities that develop all these key areas in order to inspire and create a love of learning. We assess the Characteristics of Learning of each child to ensure all children are becoming independent, explorative and willing to ‘have a go’ at lots of new activities and experiences. We introduce themes to interest the children and create a love of learning, which change according to the children’s interests.

Outdoor Learning

We also have a fantastic new garden and outdoor area which includes sand, water and a mud kitchen so it would be helpful if you are able to provide your child with a pair of wellies and a waterproof suit or similar if possible. We also love to go exploring on our Welly Walks so we would appreciate it if you could ensure your child comes dressed in a suitably warm coat, especially in the Autumn and Winter months.

Maths and Literacy

In Reception we have a short Maths and Literacy session with our class groups and then we practise these skills throughout the shared Reception provision. We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme and the Read, Write Inc Phonics Scheme. If you would like to support your child at home then you can access these via the home learning pages on the website links below:

Tapestry

Your child has an online learning journal 'Tapestry' which you will have your own personal log in for. You can see what they have been doing at school and also show us what they have been doing at home! We would really appreciate it if you could take some photos of their home learning and upload onto their Tapestry journals for us to see.

Home Reading

Your child has the opportunity to borrow class library books to share with you at home and they are free to change them whenever they are ready for a new one. These books are initially story books for you to read to them but as the year progresses they will be able to bring home some books that they can read themselves. We usually encourage the children to bring their reading folders in on a daily basis and place them in their work baskets.

We will provide you with a selection of homework challenges each half term which we hope you will enjoy completing with your child (feel free to choose however many of the challenges you wish to do-you do not have to complete them all!)
